Equality v Equity are like the chicken and the egg. What comes first? And that's the conundrum!

The words diversity and inclusion are often used together. However, diversity doesn't really matter without inclusion. Same as the old metaphor of 'being invited to a party but not being asked to dance'. If you can't dance, what's the point? The same applies to Equality v Equity. But treating everyone the same does not solve discrimination. Anywhere near it. Au contraire it fosters it.

If we take as an example the main picture (courtesy of the Interaction Institute for Social Change) and the three persons were treated the same, one would be seriously disadvantaged. But all three could see beyond the fence with minor appropriate modifications. Equity, though, might require, like the picture, adjustments. And sometimes, somebody somewhere would need to give up something to ensure a more equitable affair for those who need it most. And this can be tricky.

Firstly Diversity & Inclusion, Equality & Equity support fully-fledged organisational capability. Secondly, talent attraction and development. Finally, and ultimately, high performance. So far all good in theory. But how would you feel if that happens to you? For example, if you were the one having to give up something to allow an equitable working environment? Has this happened to you? How did it make you feel? Leave a comment; experience teaches...
