Hello there, Happy Monday, or shall I say instead Happy Halloween? I never really got into this "festivity". I never quite understood the point. And nowadays, retailers start almost in the summer to talk about and try to sell Halloween-themed stuff. I resent that. I hold on for dear life to summer, wanting to last as long as possible, and I am catapulted into Autumn ( or Fall for the American cousins who read the blog) far too early for my liking,THE ORIGIN OF HALLOWEEN AND TRICK OR TREAT
In ancient times, the Celtic festival of Samhain was celebrated with people lighting up bonfires and wearing costumes to ward off ghosts. During the reign of Pope Gregory III (731–741), the festival broadened to include all saints and martyrs and moved to November 1 (All Saints Day). This contained some of the Celtic traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve. Later it became Halloween. With time it developed into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, wearing costumes and eating treats. In 1000 A.D., the church made November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to commemorate baptized Christians who are believed to be in purgatory. Many believe that the church was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, church holiday. And so, All Souls' Day was celebrated similarly to Samhain. Big bonfires, parades and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels and devils.
Paganism mixed with religion. I can understand children wanting to trick or treat or wearing costumes. But adults a bit less.
Is it perhaps a way to escape ourselves and express part of us that we usually repress?
Answer on a postcard.
If you like and go out to "celebrate" tonight, have fun and keep safe.
See you soon x
