Hello everyone, let's talk about change. It starts from within, but how do you keep that from, well, changing? How do you stay true to it? This is a question I’ve been asked hundreds of times. Do you know that each time, my answer hasn’t changed? As said in my previous blog, I don’t do resolutions. I make promises. I’ve briefly explained the differences, and you can read about them here. So, you’ve made a promise to yourself, and you’re finding it difficult to stay true to that promise, that change, now what? The biggest challenge with staying true to change is when we make too drastic a change all at once. Let me explain further.

Expectations for Change

Setting realistic expectations is key to overcoming difficult changes can be uninspiring. Some changes are harder than others. For instance, quitting coffee by going cold turkey doesn’t work because caffeine is a drug, a stimulant with a half-life of up to five hours. This means that even after you have your cup for the day, the effect remains with you for upwards of eight hours. Being used to this makes you and your body dependent on the effect just to get through the day. Depriving your body all of a sudden of caffeine can affect your moods, productivity, and even your overall health. Some would say that the trick here is to gradually decrease the amount of caffeine you ingest a day and over a period of time, your body will learn to depend less and less on the stimulant. However, when it comes to goals, big impossible dreams are better motivators. We have a lifetime of bad habits to undo, and we must of course begin with accepting that we have these habits before we consciously, eradicate these habits from our lives. And to stay true to change falls into the same light. Some say you should begin small and work your way upwards. I say go big, bigger than you could ever imagine, because shooting for the Moon could land you amongst the stars if you miss. Don't stick to realistic expectations, find the path that excites you most and stay true to your promise of change. All the best x
