Awareness

Hello everyone and welcome back. As you know, I am all for raising awareness, whether it be about managing stress, or about breast cancer. Collectively, we support the causes that affect our communities. For those of you living in the UK, you may be aware of the fact that this week is Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week. While this movement began in the North West of the UK, it is growing, and picking up steam throughout the country. There are no excuses for sexual violence, no reasons, no justification. This is a behaviour that must stop – however, due to the nature of this sort of violence, acts of abuse often go unheard, unreported and hidden away due to shame and disgust. And as we keep silent about sexual violence awareness, the perpetrators further their ghastly actions and continue hurting more people. We must speak up when we see or even suspect abuse! For it to come to an end, action must be taken. We need to throw off the taboo of speaking out as this not only diminishes the stigma attached to it, but also protects the community. There are ways to raise awareness without putting yourself at risk. Education can change the nation, and we must educate men. Our sons, brothers, friends, and relatives – on this important subject! Until men understand that sexual violence is not OKAY and will not be taken lightly, it will just be an endless campaign on our part with no real results!

How to raise sexual violence awareness

Sexual abusers are often cowards who seek to dominate through sexual violence. And like all cowards, they fear confrontation. So, considering this, if you or anyone you know is a victim of sexual violence, remember that you must reach out to someone that you trust, someone who can assist, and someone that will have your back. We must speak up at even a suspicion of abuse, because as a woman, sometimes you just know, and you have to trust your gut. For any campaign to be successful, we must take action – and the actions here are educating the men and speaking up against any type of abuse. To find someone to talk to, you can always check out this website. Remember that being a strong woman does not mean that you should not ask for help! If anything, the strength of a woman is in the support she receives from her fellow friends, family, and community. And if that support isn’t freely given, then be the one to change it, by being a beacon of support for others who need it. Always remember that if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for everything. This is the time to stand up against sexual violence. See you soon x
