In lesson 203, Grout expands on the quote from Schweitzer and tells the story of Lisa Rankin MD; the cut the story short, she gave a placebo to a patient of hers with a tumour the size of an orange who begged for an experimental drug that was making headlines. Once he started taking it, the tumour disappeared. Then the story in the news changed (e.g. the drug was not as effective as originally thought), and his tumour returned. Dr Rankin gave him another placebo pretending it was a stronger version of the drug. Again the tumour disappeared. Finally, the FDA pronounced the drug ineffective and pulled it off the market.
