Self-appreciation is critical because it is about valuing who you already are: so how can you appreciate yourself? It is easy to say, but do it? I mean, accepting who you are right here and right now without any judgement after years of second-guessing and self-criticism is not going to happen overnight. Hopefully, you have already started and progress on the journey to Self-acceptance. This is the next step.

HOW TO APPRECIATE YOURSELF: STEP 1

Step out of your negative thoughts. I know it sounds elementary, but it really is the first step. Think about it: if you are sitting next to an open log fire and suddenly a little spark jumps at you on your lovely cashmere jumper (or silk shirt as it is almost summer). If you leave it there, it is likely it is going to burn a hole in the shirt. Even worse, burn you. But if you quickly stamp it out, no harm is done. The same applies to your negative thoughts. They erode your value, little by little until you don't see it anymore. And so, when you start noticing that you are hard on yourself, criticising or worse, stop for a minute. And then step out of your thoughts - you are not your thoughts. Computers have programs; we have thoughts that run us. Most of the time, they've got nothing to do with us but the results of societal and family paradigms. Download your programming and then reboot. Say what? I find it helpful to write my thoughts down (I use morning pages/freewriting), dump the c**- on a page. I find that when I've moved past my thoughts, I realise that my situation is not as bad as I have it in my head, and there is always room for positivity, hope, and self-appreciation. This requires practice, so let's do it for the next seven day and stamp out negative thoughts. It's the first step toward Self-appreciation.
