This month in the journey to self-acceptance we have been talking about being perfectly imperfect. But embracing your imperfections really means daring to be vulnerable. Ouch! I know. Vulnerability sounds even scarier than not being perfect.

BUT WHAT'S BEING VULNERABLE?

Firstly, being vulnerable is engaging fully and openly with the world around us. Secondly is being open despite knowing it might hurt us. Finally, vulnerability is what allows human beings to feel love, belonging and joy. It feels a bit like going out there without makeup, with no armour hoping the real you isn’t too disappointing. And still feeling worthy.

"Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage.

Truth and courage aren't alwayts comfortable, but they are never weakness" - Brené Brown

Professor Brené Brown, in her six-year research on vulnerability, discovered what people who felt worthy have in common. They:
  • embrace imperfection
  • have compassion for themselves and others
  • connect as a result of being authentic
  • believe vulnerability is what makes them beautiful and simply necessary
  • invest in the unknown.
Vulnerability is where courage and fear meet. It is awkward and scary, but also freedom and liberation. Being uniquely you. I hope during this month-long journey towards self-acceptance you have realised that you ARE worthy. Right here, right now. Perfectly imperfect and absolutely fabulous.

TED TALK ON THE TOPIC

Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston and a visiting professor in management at The University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business. Her 2010 TED Talk, "The power of vulnerability," is one of the most viewed talks in the world.
