Anti-Bullying week

Hello everyone and welcome back. As you know, it is Anti-Bullying week. It is a time in particular, where we can bring awareness of this behaviour. To its far-reaching effects on the community, the younger generation and to us personally. A bully is a person who habitually seeks to harm or intimidate those whom they perceive as vulnerable, or weak. Bullying isn’t limited to children in the playground at school where lunch money is taken, or bigger kids picking on smaller ones. No. It is all too common, if you know the signs to look for. It is in the breaking of your morale by your ‘frenemies’, the snide comments by your co-workers. Even the intimidation tactics that higher management may use on you in your workspace. Unfortunately, though, through media and upbringing, we assume that bullying is isolated to kids, to school-going children and that the same behaviours do not translate to bullying in adult life. But as I always say, change starts from within – and self-acknowledgement and acceptance will not just give you an awareness of yourself, but of those around you as well.

Self-awareness to overcome bullying

In our blog posts not too long ago, we looked extensively at self-resilience and self-reflection. Of course, by doing so, we began to understand who we are as people, what our goals may be, and the type of things that make us vulnerable. This is particularly important as bullies prey on the vulnerable – or rather, those whom they perceive to be vulnerable. By getting to know your own vulnerabilities, you will be able to find the triggers that turn you into targets for those bullies. However, admitting to vulnerability isn’t easy and it takes a deep look within. Similarly, bullies are often created through their own vulnerability, and it is crucial for us to educate the younger generation, and if we can, the current generation too, on why self-acceptance can help to overcome these deeply sensitive traits. As I always say, you cannot begin outward without sorting out your inside. So, make sure that you have looked within yourself before you begin reaching out to assist others. It all starts with you. What makes you vulnerable? Until next time x
