My Best Meal in Islington: Trullo and Highbury & Islington

Islington residents are spoiled with the local food scene, with very few areas offering so many restaurants and so many great places to eat. This month my #feature blog #MyBestMealIslington is covering Trullo, a lovely tiny restaurant just around Highbury Corner, St. Paul's Road, N1. Food, wine, attention to detail - Trullo is a neighbourhood Italian, serving simple, affordable River Café-style food, at a fraction of the starry Italian, a two floors contemporary trattoria with a reputation for fresh pasta, charcoal grilling, and gorgeous tarts. If it wasn't for the London buses and traffic outside you could even think you are in some trattoria in Italy. The people working there are knowledgeable with a passion for what they do; the menu changes daily, inspired by the market ( even on the restaurant's website you will only see "recent menus" not the current) and it has big bold flavours from great ingredients presented in a simple non-pretentious manner. Evenings are normally very busy whilst lunchtimes are calmer unless you are talking weekends in that case you might find a rush from the champagne-socialist-city types-Arsenal supporters who meet up for a meal prior to the Gunners' home game ( the stadium is within walking distance). Pappardelle with beef ragu has been a staple since Trullo’s early days and, even though I am not a pasta lover and I have now eliminated gluten from my day-to-day, I must admit I couldn't resist it and it was/is an absolute delight. Considering the quality and the demand, the prices are quite low. If you don't believe me, I am not the only one to sing the praises of this little gem: “Great food, expertly cooked and served by friendly waiting staff... there’s no secret to Trullo’s success” —Jay Rayner, Observer
“I’ve been twice in the past three days, and I’m going back on Friday. I may review it again next week. I may not bother going anywhere ever again” —Giles Coren, Times
The restaurant has continental style opening hours: Mon-Sat lunchtime 12.30 to 14.45 Sun lunchtime 12.30 to 15.00 Mon-Sat dinner 18.00 - 22.15 Trullo is definitely #MyBestMealIslington #HighburyChallenge. Now is up to you my lovely followers and occasional readers: which one is your best eats - #MyBestMealIslington - #HighburyChallenge or best eat-in #Islington? I tell you what, come and visit Islington at the weekend and try The Alma Pub (Canonbury), La Ferme ( Exmouth Market ) and then Trullo (Highbury) and then let me know which one is your #MyBestMealIslington - how about that? ;-) Buon Appetito x
