Everyone is talking about apprentices but, behind the big headlines, there is a lot of uncertainty regarding the funding and ownership of schemes. People still think that the process is complicated and requires a lot of investment both in time and money. The Skills Funding Agency (or other approved provider) can take a lot of the burden from employers and provide support both in terms of legislation and training responsibilities. The system is being reformed in 2017 but at present, the 240 guided learning hours are fully funded by the government for 16-18 years old and the chosen training provider manages this funding directly (source CIPD). So if you need an apprentice you will need to:- chose a training provider recommended by a national body (please check, it differs between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland)
- establish a budget jointly with the training provider (what funding are you entitled to? who will pay the apprentice wage?)
- recruit to the apprenticeship scheme
- ensure you have an employment contract ready
