When Life Gives You Lemons, You Make A Lemonade, Better Still A Limoncello - You Don't Give Up! "Never, Never, Never, Never, Never Give Up!" - Winston Churchill. I'm starting this blog by saying that this is not a post about Brexit and inspiring the nation at this time in our history to hold it together using the words of one the most charismatic and respected British past politician - Nope. This is a blog about having to make a fresh start in life, in your career, for whatever reason: redundancy, insolvency, illness, re-entering the world of work after raising children etc. etc. etc... Things happen but the important thing to remember is that life is like a book with different self-contained chapters that evolve out of one another to form the overall story - the point being: when one chapter finishes, there is another, and another... Sometimes the story has an unexpected turn, plot twists and it is important to control fear and anxiety and not letting them decide for us which direction to go, or stopping us for making decisions full stop. Re-invention and/or starting again in a new field can be scary and exciting at the same time.

How do you get started then?

Take a blank piece of paper and start by writing down all your likes, dislike, fears, dreams - don't limit yourself at this point. After the sky-thinking you can start narrowing it down:
  • what are your skills? - list ALL your skills both from your previous professional career/s and your hobbies
  • what do you really like to do and are good at it?
  • what type of life you'd like to have ( best case scenario, somewhere in the middle and minimum standard)?
    • what type of income would you need for the different scenarios?
    • similarly what type of company you would like to work for? or
    • would you prefer a portfolio career with a mix of jobs? (read A Portfolio Career. But Is It Suitable For Everyone? to see if it is a good option for you)Now it is time to do some career mapping:
  • what sectors/industry are more aligned with your skills and the lifestyle you'd like?
  • list a mix of companies of different size within the chosen sectors or
  • list a mix of part-time/freelance/side hustles you could do in the chosen sectors
I hope this will get your juices flowing to make the most of whatever situation you find yourself in (for more detailed advice look up my book STOP IT! It's all in your head and the Think, Look and Act the Part Method with all the related exercises). The important thing is: "Never, Never, Never, Never, Never Give Up!" - Winston Churchill. When life give you lemons, you can make a delicious limoncello ;-) #youcreateyourownreality #lifestyledesign #lifestyleedit #followme #like #share
