The People Alchemist Edit: you create your own reality; there's no need to compare or compete with others

If We Are Not Our Job, Who Are We? The Joneses Don't Live Here Anymore - Stop Comparing - You Are Who You Say You Are And That Is More Than Enough. In some of my previous blogs, I explored the concept of pursuing what we really want career-wise without societal conditioning (Tell Me What You Want, What You Really Really Want....). Diversification and building portfolio careers (In a disrupted world, what is the new career deal then?). And separating what you do from how you earn (Is Your Work Your Passion Or Is It Just A Mean To An End? The Tim Ferriss And The 4 Hour Work Week Hypothesis). The world of work has changed and keeps on changing. The retirement age is moving further and further, and perceptions and needs have changed: the old career paradigm, job-linked-to-status-and-money-thing and self-actualisation are now up for grabs. The rise of the gig-economy, flexibility and lifestyle as the new currency and the digital nomad tribe are still, however, attached to the concept of 'we are what we do' (yes, even the digital nomad tribe sells the 'digital nomad ' identity) and the first step is to stop comparing our achievements/activities to what others do - The Joneses have to go... We create our own reality, and that needs to be a reality that satisfies us first and foremost, and comparison only hinders us. The questions for me are:
  • If we are not our job, then who are we?
  • Can we really define ourselves beyond what we do?
  • If our job is not our identity, what will replace it?
