ThePeopleAlchemist Edit: how to advance your writing career
How Many Of You Want To Be Writers? Then Why Aren't You At Home Writing?
Well, here is a final suggestion from Write For Your Life (hey, if you haven't realised by now that I am perhaps Lawrence Block's biggest fan, where have you been???) to help you beat procrastination, inaction and the feeling that you are not doing enough: the 'Five Things I Did Today To Advance My Writing Career' process.
Every night, before you go to bed, write on a notepad/notebook a list of five things you did that day to advance your writing career. I can see you now going: 'What??!!'.
I know it does sound both simple and at the same time daunting as you may say, 'I haven't done anything, what am I going to write?'.
Like Block says: 'One of the most important lessons of Write For Your Life is that the most productive action we can take as writers is not to work harder, ... turn out more work. Very often we can make more real progress writing affirmations, listening to a tape, going for a walk'.
everything counts
This links back to affirmation Day 6 and 16 - No one knows more than my writer's intuition and Everything I do for enjoyment further my writing career. Everyone has a tremendous amount of material to write about.
Did you read the paper? Write it down.
And did you go for a walk and think about a project? Write down.
Seeee, it is not that difficult.
The most important thing about this process is realising that Everything you do can serve you in your career as a writer. So start to pay attention, live in the moment, milk each experience to the max and, most importantly, get out of your way and Believe In Yourself.
