Hi everyone! Welcome back! Following our last few blog posts on finance and money, I realised that this is a good moment as any to talk about self-love. One of the most fundamental aspects of self-love is self-acceptance. And in the same way, you cannot truly love yourself without accepting yourself. But what does this have to do with money and finance? The numbers in our life often throw us off balance. It can be a number on the scale, the number of presents we receive during the festive season or even the lines on our faces. However, like those numbers in your life, the number that reflects your bank balance is not a reflection of your self-worth, and likewise, not a measure of your ability or your happiness.

Can money buy happiness?

The question often quoted and misunderstood is whether money can buy happiness. And the answer, unfortunately, is also dependent on the one who is answering. I feel that the biggest problem around this is that we like nice things, and money allows us to buy nice things – but that simply makes us happy for a moment. It is not the essence of happiness as a whole. Happiness requires more than just retail therapy. That is where self-love comes in. Happiness loves self-love. In our self-reflection posts, we touched on the five love languages, and even though one of the languages is to receive gifts, it is important to note that we tend to cherish and place more emphasis on personalised gifts than generic store-bought items. It is a key example that our happiness is not limited to simply nice things – but we appreciate and acknowledge the thoughts and work behind the action. In the same way, self-love, as much as it relies on acceptance, requires discipline and works to assist us in loving ourselves as best we can. And I like to pamper myself as much as you do, however, that is not the sum total of loving oneself entirely. Positive Psychology has an interesting article on self-worth that you can read about. Don’t equate your self-worth to that number in your account or the number of presents under your Christmas tree – don’t even judge yourself by the number on the scale or the number of lines on your face. You’re more than that – you are you! So, take a moment and look at where you are, and how you feel about yourself because, in the end, no one should love you better than you do. See you soon x
